Suspect arrested from fatal September hit-and-run on McEver road

A Gainesville man has been arrested and charged in a fatal hit-and-run that occurred along McEver Road back in September.

The incident happened on Sept. 24 in the area of Spring Road and McEver Road, according to the Gainesville Police Department. At that time, a vehicle struck and killed Omer Herman Morris, 37, just before 8:30 p.m. He was taken to the hospital but later died from his injuries.

Police have been working over the past few months to narrow down a suspect using video footage from local businesses and eyewitness accounts.

The department announced Monday they had arrested and charged Joshua Shane Harkins, 44, of Gainesville, with felony homicide by vehicle, felony failure to stop at an accident with death or serious injury, felony tampering with evidence and leaving the scene of an accident.

Harkins is currently being held in the Hall County Jail as of the last report.

“We are thankful for the many tips, information and leads from the community,” Chief Jay Parrish said. “We hope this arrest will help bring some closure to the family of Mr. Morris.”

A video was released on Oct. 10 of what officials believed was footage of Harkins’ vehicle. After that, several tips reportedly came in that led to his arrest. The Georgia Information Sharing and Analysis Center also played a vital role in the investigation, according to the department.
