Georgia gas prices rise five cents in the past week

The average price for a gallon of gas in Georgia continued its upward trend this past week, according to the weekly fuel price report from AAA.

AAA said Georgia drivers were paying $2.81 per gallon for regular gas as of Monday, which was up five cents from the week prior. Monday's average was still about 11 cents less than a month prior, and 30 cents less than a year prior.

“Gas prices are increasing nationally due to tighter supply and elevated demand,” Montrae Waiters, AAA spokeswoman said. “In the southern states, Georgia continues to have the cheapest gas at the pumps. However, that ranking may end once Georgia terminates its gas tax suspension on Tuesday, January 10th.”

Stephens County had some of the cheapest gas in northeast Georgia, with an average of $2.66 on Monday. Meanwhile, Union County had some of the most expensive gas in the region, with an average of $2.88.

The national average rose by eight cents to an average of $3.28 in the same time period. The Energy Information Administration said gas demand rose from 8.71 to 9.33 million barrels a day. However, the current rate is nearly 400,000 barrels a day lower than at the end of December 2021.
