A section of highway in Hall County is renamed to honor a fallen officer

A fallen Hall County officer has been honored 24 years after being killed while on duty. Officer Bobbie Hoenie, 29, was hit by a car on Hwy. 53 after stopping to help a stranded vehicle. Now a portion of Highway 53 in Hall County has been named the Officer Bobbie S. Hoenie Memorial Highway. The portion of the highway between the Hall and Forsyth County line and Little Hall Park will serve as a reminder of her sacrifice.

Officer Hoenie was killed on March 20, 1998 after stopping to help a stranded motorist. She had worked for the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office for three months at the jail and was heading to her job as a Hall County 911 dispatcher on the day she was killed.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office shared the story of the horrific day on their social media sites. “That was the same morning tornadoes had skipped across Hall and White counties, leaving a trail of devastation behind. Officer Hoenie stopped to help a stranded motorist on Highway 53 in the aftermath of the storms.” After assisting those in the vehicle, Officer Hoenie began moving debris from the roadway. She was struck and killed by another vehicle traveling on Hwy. 53.

On Monday, there was a presentation at the site of the sign on Hwy. 53. Hoenie’s family was presented with copies of the sign. Friends, family and former coworkers were all there to remember her life and her sacrifice.

In 2020 Hoenie’s name was added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in the nation’s capital. Her name is also engraved on the Georgia Public Safety Memorial Wall located in Forsyth, Georgia.
