Man receives life prison sentence for shooting Banks Co. Deputy

A North Carolina man received a life prison sentence on Friday for shooting a Banks County deputy in February.

Robert Miguel Brodie, 32, was convicted on charges of: aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer, aggravated battery, kidnapping with bodily injury, theft by receiving stolen property and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

The officer-involved shooting happened on Feb. 8 around 2 a.m. in Commerce, when Banks County officers noticed a suspicious car in a Super 8 Motel parking lot. They found Brodie sleeping in his car with a woman.

Officers checked Brodie’s license plate and found that Brodie was wanted in North Carolina for kidnapping. The woman in the car was Brodie’s kidnapping victim.

According to the GBI, officers tried to wake Brodie and the woman. Brodie shot the woman and then fired at officers. One deputy was shot and was transported to the hospital, where he was later released.

Brodie also sustained gunshot wounds, but no one was killed in the incident.

Brodie will serve life in prison without the possibility of parole.
