Sprinklers control fire inside Cornelia poultry processing plant

A pre-dawn fire Sunday inside the Fieldale processing plant in Cornelia was contained to one piece of equipment and the control wires above it.

Cornelia Fire Department Division Chief Josh Hazle said the fire, which resulted from a short in a light fixture over a conveyor belt, was kept in check by five sprinkler heads until firefighters arrived.

No personnel were working in the plant at the time of the fire, reported at 4:39 Sunday morning.

Firefighters from Cornelia, Baldwin, Demorest, and Habersham County responded to the reported commercial fire, with four firefighters going inside and locating the problem within about five minutes. Once power and the sprinkler system were cut off, firefighters knocked out the rest of the fire with a water/foam extinguisher..

Fieldale maintenance and subcontractors began work immediately to repair the area in time for normal start-up Monday morning.
