CARROLLTON — Buford used a huge third quarter run to grab the lead and then held off a furious Sequoyah charge down the stretch to sneak away with a 73-72 win in the Class 6A semifinals at the University of West Georgia on Saturday.

The Wolves trailed by as many as nine points in the second quarter before beginning the comeback to pull within 38-34 by halftime. Buford exploded for 22 third quarter points to take a 56-52 lead.

Buford eventually built a nine-point lead midway through the fourth before the Chiefs stormed back, getting to within 71-69 with just under 20 seconds left.

Buford turned the ball over on its next possession but the Wolves a pair of layups in the final moments and Malachi Brown hit two free throws with 9 seconds left for 73-69 lead.

But the Chiefs’ Kyle Keener hit a 3-pointer with 2.3 seconds left to close the gap. Buford was fouled with 0.8 seconds left and missed the free throw and Sequoyah was not able to get a shot off before time ran out to seal the Wolves win.

Alahn Sumter led Buford with 21 points and Jaylon Taylor added 20 but the pair combined for 22 points in the second half to lead the rally. Brown finished with 17 for the Wolves, 11 coming after halftime as well.

Dylan Wolle paced Sequoyah with 25 points.

Buford, which is looking for its first Class 6A title and third overall since 2017, will take Grovetown next Friday’s 7:30 p.m. final in Macon.
