Multi-agency investigation leads to three illegal gambling arrests in Hall County

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit on Thursday arrested three men who are accused of illegal gambling.

Authorities from multiple agencies executed search warrants on Thursday at three Hall County convenience stores.

Harun Ur Rashid, 63, of Buford was arrested at a convenience store in the 5800 block of Lanier Island Parkway. Zafar Iqbal Ranjha, 61, of Flowery Branch, was taken into custody at a store in the 5400 block of Georgia 13/Atlanta Highway. Shajumon Philip, 58, of Marietta was also arrested at a convenience store in the 4400 block of Georgia 365/Cornelia Highway.

The suspects are accused of operating stores with gambling machines that paid the players in cash. Deputies charged each man with commercial gambling, a felony, and keeping a place of gambling, a misdemeanor.

The men were booked into the Hall County Jail, and Ranjha and Philip were released Thursday on a $7,000 bond. Rashid is still in jail as of Friday morning on the same bond amount.

Hall County Sheriff’s Office Uniform Patrol Division and Warrant Service Unit deputies, Flowery Branch police officers and inspectors with the Georgia Lottery Corporation Coin Operated Amusement Machines assisted the sheriff's office SIU with the investigation.

No further arrests are anticipated, and the case remains under investigation.
