An Athens woman convicted of shooting and killing a pregnant mother in 2019 was sentenced Friday.
Kiresa Shanice Cooper, 29, will serve two consecutive life terms in prison, according to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Cooper was convicted of malice murder and feticide in the shooting death of Auriel Callaway, 24.
Authorities said Callaway was a bystander when a fight broke out between several young women at the Clarke Garden apartments. A shot fired by Cooper struck Callaway, who was attempting to shield her 3-year-old son. Callaway was taken to a local hospital where she died shortly after,
Cooper denied shooting Callaway at trial. However, a bullet retrieved from the victim's body matched that of a gun belonging to Cooper. Witnesses also identified Cooper, who fled to Cobb County following the crime, as the shooter.
In addition to the two life sentences, Cooper received a 10-year-sentence for two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
