Just three days after COVID hospitalizations at Northeast Georgia Health System reached the same number as the first peak in cases, hospitalized patients now number the same as the second peak. The first peak of 159 occurred in April 2020, while the second peak of 179 happened in August 2020.
NGHS resumed daily posting of COVID hospitalization data when the Delta variant began to spread across the region, rapidly adding to the number of patients requiring hospital care.
As a comparison, just one month ago on July 12, just 16 patients were being treated for COVID at NGHS facilities. A week later, hospitalizations rose into the 20s and have continued to increase ever since.
Of those patients hospitalized on Thursday. Aug. 12, 83% have not been vaccinated against the virus. The average age of hospitalized patients is 62.
