Northeast Georgia Medical Center will hold a robotic surgery showcase Saturday.
The showcase, which will take place at The Boathouse on Clarks Bridge Rd., will allow visitors to “test drive” the Intuitive Surgical da Vinci Surgical Robot and meet the center’s robotic surgeons.
The system is used as a tool for laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Chad Copper with NGMC said on WDUN’s Mornings on Maine Street Thursday the system allows surgeons to perform a surgery similarly to how they would perform an open surgery without making large incisions.
“We use it all across the realm of all surgeries, because it's not really just a niche instrument,” Copper explained. “It's really used for anything that we can do laparoscopically. So it allows us to actually do more surgeries in a minimally invasive fashion.”
Copper explained that the system is completely controlled by the surgeon performing the operation.
“This is the first time where we've allowed us to have some kind of computer aided instrument in our hands,” he said. “So you put a computer in between the patient and the surgeon and allow them to have that kind of technology to enhance what the surgeon’s skills already are.”
The drop-in event will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. NGMC said attendees will have a chance to win free giveaways and a door prize at the event.
