A Gwinnett County woman remained in the Hall County Jail on Tuesday, charged with extorting money from an elderly disabled man.

Melinda Denise Davis, 26, of Peachtree Corners was arrested Friday, June 18 at the Gwinnett County Jail and transported to Hall County to face charges of theft by extortion and exploitation of an elderly person.

"According to the initial investigation, between Nov. 1 and Nov. 30 of 2020, Davis threatened to expose details of a relationship between herself and the victim, an elderly disabled man," said Derreck Booth, spokesman for the Hall County Sheriff's Office. "She used the information to force the victim to give her $7,500 to remain silent, placing the man and his spouse in financial hardship."

Booth declined to discuss the nature of the relationship.

"Deputies were first notified about the incident on Jan. 10, 2021, from one of the victims," Booth said. "Investigators obtained arrest warrants for Davis on Feb. 4, 2021."

Davis has a bond of $6,100.
