Over 1,000 animals adopted from Humane Society of Northeast Georgia in 2020

2020 brought a wide array of hardships, but for many animals at the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia, 2020 was the best year of their life.

Throughout the year, 1,318 unique animals were adopted and found their forever homes. According to Samantha Threadgill, Development and Marketing Director with the Humane Society, that is around 100 more than last year.

"I think that people have been more open to having animals because maybe they're at home more." Threadgill said, referring to those working from home during the pandemic.

As for spays and neuters this year, the humane society saw a bit of decline because it was closed for three months in 2020.

Since the spay and neuter clinic opened, they have done over 85,000 spays and neuters. That number includes rescues and pets brought into the clinic.

The Humane Society also saved 127 special case animals in 2020. Special cases refer to any animal that comes in with a health condition that is out of the ordinary, such as a broken leg or a mother with puppies. Because of donations, Threadgill said they have been able to take in more special case animals each year.

"Generosity comes in so many different forms," Threadgill said. "Our volunteers and fosters have been amazing during the pandemic."

Anyone who wants to help in any way, whether it be through volunteering, fostering, donating or even adopting an animal, can find out how on the humane society's website.

"2020 was even more of an impressive year where people might have been suffering themselves, they never stopped helping us," Threadgill said. "I hope that 2021 keeps that trend going. I hope that people are still supportive in whatever shape and form that is for them."
