Gwinnett County: Lane closures on SR 316 will make way for new bridge construction

Gwinnett travelers can expect more lane closures on State Route 316, so that the Department of Transportation can continue work on the Harbins Road interchange.

According to a press release from Gwinnett County, lane closures and traffic pacing over the next several days will allow work crews to place bridge beams on the new structure.

Westbound traffic will be impacted the most. The left lane of SR 316 westbound will be closed on Friday, February 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. starting approximately ½ mile before the Harbins Road Intersection. “This lane closure will allow the bridge beams to be brought on-site and placed on the bridge’s new structure,” states the press release.

Then again on Monday and Tuesday nights, Feb. 8 and 9, the contractor will close the left lane from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. According to the statement, “The goal is to set five beams each night, so traffic is expected to be paced five times.”

Pacing traffic means that law enforcement officers place their vehicles at the front of a lane of traffic and slow the traffic to provide a gap of time and space at the construction site without any motorists in the work zone. Message boards will be in place to make motorists aware of the pending work so they can take alternate routes as needed.
