Basketball: Area teams advance in local tournaments

The Kelly King Classic in Dahlonega, the Battle of the States tournament in Hiawassee and the McDonald's Classic in Hartwell also got underway on Tuesday.

In Dahlonega, the second-ranked Jefferson girls (Class 4A) will battle Class 2A No. 2 Fannin County in the semifinals at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. The Lady Rebels knocked off North Gwinnett to advance, 50-42. 

The Lumpkin County boys had four in double figures to run past Fannin County, 60-47. Jones Harris led the Indians with 14 points, while Jack Carroll and Hunter Cooper finished with 11 points. Cal Faulkner finished with 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds. The Indians will play Mill Creek in the semifinals at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Monroe Area boys beat Duluth 69-65 to advance. The Hurricanes were 9-of-10 from the foul line in the final minute of the game to secure the semifinals berth. 

Monroe Area will take on River Ridge, who beat Banks County, 61-44, in the semifinals on Wednesday. Banks County will play Duluth in the consolation round. 

In Hiawassee, Gracie Deetz led the Rabun County girls with 13 points and seven rebounds past Strom Thurmond, SC, 68-34, to advance to the semifinals. Carley Haban added 12 points, while Mili Watts chipped in nine points. The Lady Wildcats will play East Forsyth on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Battle of States 

On the boys side, Connor McKay scored 22 points and pulled 11 boards to pace Rabun County past Strom Thurmond, 67-42. Gus Hood added 21 points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals, while Grayson Carver turned in 13 points in the win. 

In Hartwell, fifth-ranked Jefferson beat Daniel, SC, 57-53, to roll into the finals of the McDonald's Classic. JT Fulkrod led with 15 and Dalen Gales added 12.
