A Clayton man was arrested Wednesday evening after he allegedly led state troopers on a high-speed chase through Habersham and Stephens counties.

According to a press release from Georgia State Patrol Post 7, David Henry Diggs, 28, is facing several charges in the incident, including felony fleeing, DUI, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime and other traffic charges.

A trooper from Post 7 first attempted to pull over a Black Chevrolet 2500 for speeding on State Route 15 near the Habersham/Rabun County line at 9:40 p.m. Diggs, the driver of the truck, then allegedly sped up to speeds above 100 miles per hour heading southbound.

The state trooper attempted to perform multiple PIT maneuver techniques, all of which were unsuccessful. On the final PIT maneuver attempt, the trooper struck a concrete mailbox with the front right corner of his vehicle. The trooper’s vehicle was disabled after the impact.

The truck recovered from the PIT attempt and fled into Stephens County, where he drove for another 10 miles. Units with the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office pursued Diggs and eventually arrested him after the truck was disabled.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

Diggs remained in the Habersham County Jail pending a bond hearing as of 8 a.m. Thursday.

Aside from the Georgia State Patrol and the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, units from the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office and Oconee County South Carolina Sheriff’s Office also assisted in the incident.
