Alpharetta officer clocks motorcycle at 178 mph on Ga. 400

Ever since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, law enforcement agencies with jurisdiction on the Georgia 400 corridor have reported motorists traveling at excessive speeds. Those departments believe the lower traffic and the open lanes of traffic are temptations for those who like to drive faster than the posted speed limit.

On Sunday, Sept. 6, an officer with the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety might have clocked the highest speed yet when his radar registered a motorcycle traveling at 178 mph.

Alpharetta DPS published the information on its Facebook page Sunday night.

"This was earlier today on 400. Hopefully, the driver of the sport bike matures a little before a tragedy happens," the post stated.

Officers did not attempt to stop the cycle operator, but said they passed along a description of the vehicle and driver to law enforcement in the Atlanta area south of Alpharetta.

Earlier this year at the onset of the pandemic, the Cumming Police Department recorded a number of motorists traveling a section of Ga. 400 at speeds of 100 mph or more.
