The driver of a dump truck faces charges after he apparently ran a red light and his vehicle overturned on an SUV at the intersection of Georgia 400 and Georgia 53 in Dawson County Monday afternoon.
The Georgia State Patrol said Jackie Wilson, 59, of Decatur was traveling northbound on Georgia 400 just after 2:30 p.m. when he failed to stop at the red light at Georgia 53. Troopers said two vehicles had already started to make their left turns from Georgia 400 southbound onto Georgia 53 and had entered the intersection of the highway. As Wilson swerved to avoid the two vehicles, his dump truck hit the front of one of the vehicles and then overturned on top of another vehicle.
The vehicle trapped under the dump truck, according to investigators, was a Honda Pilot being driven by Ashley Andrews, 35, of Gainesville. Andrews was trapped in her vehicle and had to be extricated using Jaws of Life equipment.
Andrews was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center once she was freed from her vehicle. Wilson was also taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries. The driver of the third vehicle involved in the accident was not injured, according to troopers.
The Georgia State Patrol charged Wilson with failure to obey a traffic control device, failure to maintain lane and expired tag.
