Gainesville brings back scarecrows to the downtown square this fall

By Regan Spinks

Even though Mule Camp Market has been scrapped because of the coronavirus pandemic, the traditional display of scarecrows on the Gainesville Square will return this year.

The "Squarecrow" competition, sponsored by Main Street Gainesville, will allow local businesses and organizations to create a scarecrow display that promotes their group.

Businesses located on Main Street can apply to display a scarecrow outside of their storefront for no entrance fee. Additional businesses, families and non-profits who wish to participate may do so after applying and paying a $30 application fee.

All applications must be submitted by Sept. 30.

Accepted applicants can begin setting up their displays on Oct. 5. All scarecrows must be displayed by 12 p.m. on Oct. 12.

Photos of each display will be posted to Main Street Gainesville’s Facebook page on the afternoon of Oct. 12. The organization whose display has the most likes by Oct. 31 will receive a $100 gift certificate to a downtown business of their choice.
