Sugar Hill bans football league teams from park after weekend shooting

By AccessWDUN Staff

After a fight between two football teams at a park in Sugar Hill led to a shooting, the city has banned all adult professional development teams from the park.

According to information released Sunday night by Sugar Hill officials, the conflict between the two teams erupted at Gary Pirkle Park around 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29.

"Escalation of the conflict led to an exchange of gunfire between members of both teams, resulting in a minor injury to one person," a statement from the city said. "The individual refused medical transport and was later taken by a family member to Gwinnett Medical Center for treatment of the injury to the foot/ankle."

The Gwinnett County Police Department is investigating the incident.

"Future use of the facilities at Gary Pirkle Park will not be permitted by the league who hosted the event last night or other similar adult professional development leagues until such time as a thorough review of policies related to all of our rentals can be completed," the statement said.

For now, the names of those involved have not been made public.
