Fall from Filmy Fern Falls seriously injures female

The female hiker who fell from a waterfall in northeastern Habersham County Wednesday received serious injuries.

In an update Thursday, Habersham County Emergency Services Director Chad Black said the victim, whose name and age have not been released, suffered “multiple fractures that included lumbar spine, thoracic spine, lower extremity a and facial fractures.”

Habersham County Services, Stephens County Emergency Medical Services and Lee Arrendale State Prison Fire Department responded after someone walked out from the scene to call 9-1-1. Black said the victim fell 40 to 60 feet, landing in a pool of water at the base of the waterfall.

“The patient had to be secured and removed by stokes basket with a rope system for getting her from below grade of the road, approximately 40 feet straight up to where she was taken by Stephens County EMS to a landing zone where AirLife 2 was waiting to transport her to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Trauma Center,” Black said.

The call reporting the fall in the area of Filmy Fern Falls off Pumping Station Road and Davidson Cove near the Stephens County line was reported just after 1 p.m.
