Train derails in Gwinnett County Wednesday morning

A train derailed in downtown Duluth Wednesday morning, injuring three people.

Gwinnett County Fire Fighters responded to the call just before 9:30 a.m. on Buford Highway and found the three locomotive train with roughly 20 railcars had jumped the tracks. Fire Department Assistant Public Information Officer Donald Strother said in a news release that the train had hit a truck that was on the tracks.

The conductor, engineer and truck driver all suffered minor injuries and were taken to an area hospital. A nearby citizen that stopped to provide assistance also sustained a minor injury.

One of the locomotives had a diesel fuel leak that was contained to the railroad right of way. The HAZMAT team was called in, and Strother said they found two of the derailed cars had hazardous contents, but no leaks or immediate or long-term hazards were found.

The train belongs to Norfolk Southern Corporation, and they sent a crew to assess and implement a clean up plan.
