COVID-19 positive NGMC nurse dies

A nurse at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center who had tested positive for the novel coronavirus died Tuesday morning.

Hospital system spokesman Sean Couch confirmed that Deb Stevers passed away after a period of time in critical care.

Stevers was an LPN who had worked for NGHS for 15 years. Couch added she is the first NGHS employee to die after being infected with COVID-19.

Carol Burrell, NGHS President & CEO, released a statement on Stevers death Wednesday and said Stevers will be deeply missed.

Known to many co-workers as “Mama Deb,” she joined NGHS 15 years ago. She took many new nurses under her wing and nurtured them through the early years of their careers. We, and her patients, will miss her friendly spirit and outgoing approach to life.

We continue to do all we can to protect our heroes on the front lines of this battle, and they continue bringing their best, every day, to care for our community. There’s no better way to honor Deb’s life and legacy.

Funeral arrangements for Stevers have not yet been made public.

Couch said the hospital system continues to fight the COVID-19 battle each and every day, including the addition of mobile unit outside of the North Patient Tower, which should go in Thursday. Couch estimated that Stevers death, the only employee death at the hospital system, out of about 9,000 employees and with 113 employees testing positive for COVID-19, her death made up roughly one percent of their employee cases.
