Sugar Hill man killed in Saturday afternoon crash

By AccessWDUN Staff

Speed appears to be a factor in a two-vehicle collision that killed a Sugar Hill man over the weekend, according to the Gwinnett County Police Department.

Cpl. Michele Pihera issued a press statement Monday morning, saying the fatal crash occurred on Saturday, May 9 around 5 p.m. on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard at the intersection of South Waterworks Road in Buford.

"The incident involved a motorcycle and a brown SUV.  The driver of the motorcycle died as a result of his injuries, and the SUV driver had non-life-threatening injuries," Pihera said.

Officers with the department's Accident Investigation Unit said the preliminary investigation showed the driver of the motorcycle, 37-year-old Zachary Speir, was traveling southbound on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. The driver of the SUV, identified only as a 64-year-old woman, was attempting to make a left turn onto South Waterworks Road.

"It is believed that the driver of the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed," Pihera said in the press statement. "As the brown SUV made the turn, both vehicles collided. The brown SUV rolled over after impact and landed on its roof.  The motorcycle driver was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene."
