By B.J. Williams

A Jefferson woman is dead and her husband is hospitalized after a shooting incident at the family home Thursday night.

Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum said deputies were called to 28 Preakness Trail in Jefferson at 9:50 p.m. Feb. 27. When they arrived, they found a woman and a man suffering from gunshot wounds.

"EMS transported both subjects to the hospital that night where she passed away during the night," Mangum said.

At last report, the husband, who is the suspected shooter, remained hospitalized at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

Mangum identified the woman as Stephanie Wade Ellis, 40.

"I'm not sure what prompted it [the shooting] that night, but we have had calls before to that residence for domestic violence issues," Mangum said.

She said there were children at home at the time of the deadly incident. They were not physically injured.

Mangum said the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and the GBI continue to investigate the shooting.
