Girls basketball: LCA falls in GAPPS state finals for 3rd straight year

By AccessWDUN Staff

MACON — The Lanier Christian Academy girls were hoping the third time was the charm in their quest of the GAPPS state title.

Instead, Westminster Christian Academy, and Division I Davidson-signee Sally Schultz, ruined their plans with a 47-32 win over the Lady Lightning Saturday in the championship game.

The Lady Lightning started strong in the first quarter behind Faith Wasden’s seven points, but Westminster rallied to lead 14-13 heading into the second period. WCA, behind 11 points from Schultz, pulled away for a 25-17 lead at halftime.

LCA scored the first four points of the third quarter and cut the lead to 25-21, but that was a close as the Lady Lightning would get the rest of the way. WCA slowly pulled away taking a 31-24 lead into the fourth quarter. It was all WCA in the fourth.

LCA was outscored 16-8 by WCA, which pulled away for victory.

Senior Madison Hughes, who finished as LCA’s all-time leading scorer leader and rebounder, had 2 points and 9 rebounds. Wasden led the Lady Lightning with 11 points and  4 rebounds while Ashley Avery played well in the paint with 8 points and 3 rebounds. Lexie Robertson and Reese Montgomery took turns guarding the McDonald’s All-American nominee in Schultz, but her size and outside shooting proved to be too much.

Schultz finished with a game-high 22 points and Lanie Beaver added 17 points for WCA.
