Girls playoff basketball: Banks County, East Jackson, Commerce stay alive

HOMER — The Banks County girls advanced in the Region 8-2A Tournament with a dominating 71-14 win over Oglethorpe County the first round Monday night at home.

Sadie Simpson led a balanced Lady Leopards attack with 21 points. Heather Vaughan added 13 points, Jenna Reeves had 7, and Kamryn Grier and Pollie Simpson each had 6 points for Banks County.

The Lady Leopards next will take on Elbert County on Tuesday as the tournament moves to Union County High School. Banks County will look to avenge a loss to the Lady Blue Devils last week.

In other Region 8-2A action, the Social Circle girls also advanced with a 32-31 victory Monticello on Monday.

 

EAST JACKSON GIRLS 69,
FRANKLIN COUNTY 39

In Region 8-3A first round play, the Lady Eagles snapped a six-game losing streak to end the regular season with a big win over Franklin County at the East Jackson gym.

Antonia Pittman poured in 26 points for East Jackson (11-15) which also set a new program record for wins in a season.

East Jackson next will take on Hart County on Tuesday in the second round as the tournament shifts to Franklin County.

 

COMMERCE GIRLS 47,
ATHENS CHRISTIAN 19

The Lady Tigers led from virtually start-to-finish in advancing in the Region 8-A Tournament at home on Monday night.
 
Commerce (13-10) next will take on No. 2 seed Lakeview Academy on Wednesday in the quarterfinals.
