Pickens County School District to close schools, transition to distance learning

By Lauren Hunter Multimedia Journalist

Students with the Pickens County School District will transition to distance learning beginning Monday while all schools are closed and undergo deep cleaning.

According to a press release posted to the school district’s website, the decision was made “out of an abundance of caution and based on guidance from the Department of Public Health.”

While the cause of the closure is no stated to be specifically because of an outbreak of COVID-19, a line in the release encourages the community to social distance and help “stop the spread in our community.”

Schools officials previously announced that Tate Elementary, a school within the district, would close for two weeks due to an outbreak of the coronavirus. A press release from Tate Elementary Principal Rick Townsend said that both students and staff within the school had contracted the virus.

Despite the closures, Tate Elementary, Hill City Elementary and Pickens Junior High School will still serve as polling places on election day.

The school district is set to reopen November 9. The release said that more updated information will be posted on the district’s social media pages.
