Small plane crashes near Jasper

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

A small plane crashed Friday just west of Jasper.

A social media post by Pickens County Fire and Rescue said the plane crashed around 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of Ga. 53 and Garrison Road. When crews arrived, they reportedly found the wrecked plane along with a brush fire just east of the crash site.

That brush fire was believed to be sparked by a transformer that was hit during the crash.

A report from the Federal Aviation Administration said the plane was a single-engine Vans RV9A, and that the pilot reported engine issues before the plane's wing struck a power pole.

Fire crews reportedly removed the pilot from the plane and transported them by helicopter to a trauma center. The pilot's name has not been released.

Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
