Gainesville City School Board welcomes new member, adopts 20-21 calendar

Gainesville High graduate and local businessman Kris Nordholz took the oath of office at Tuesday night's Gainesville City School Board meeting.

"I've been to a lot of meetings over the years," Nordholz said, adding he has not only been a Gainesville schools parent but also on school governance boards. "So I was somewhat familiar with what all went on, but it was my first time of this side, so I'm excited about it."

Nordholz said he was looking forward to the new facilities and the high school and keeping things the previous board planned moving forward, including the ESPLOST planned for March.

Nordholz was uncontested for the District 2 seat previously held by John Filson. He is the CEO of FullMedia.

Willie Mitchell and Sammy Smith also took the oath of office for another year.

Andy Stewart was elected board chairman, with Mitchell continuing as vice board chairman and Smith as treasurer.

The first order of big business for the new board was approving the calendar for the 2020-2021.

"They want to start making plans, and we happen to do it a little bit later than most districts and we do involve our governance councils in that process," said Superintendent Jeremy Williams.

"This calendar is going to be different for us because it does have two fewer days for students, but we also felt like that was a priority for us as staff to be able to build in more supports for mental health, first aid, more supports vertically aligning across our schools and across the district."

A copy of the approved calendar can be found here.
