Enrollment appears to be up from last year at Gainesville City Schools

Principals from each of the Gainesville city schools updated the school board Monday night on enrollment and how things were going since school started about 10 days ago.

Tentative total enrollment for the city was 8,215, which included two in Pre-K.

"Usually by the tenth day we start to drop people who don’t show up for those first 10 days, so we’ll start that process (Tuesday) and hopefully those numbers will still be higher than they were last year,”  said Superintendent Jeremy Williams.

In October of 2018, the system had slightly lower numbers, with 8,042 students enrolled.

“We see kindergarten is about the same as it was last year, around 620, 625,” he said. “The high school is sitting around 2,300 students, middle school is about 1,860, both of which are extremely high numbers,” said Williams. “So we’ve got some good conversations in the future about planning for that growth, but also for how we can address it in the future.”

Current enrollment numbers were announced by each school’s principal or a representative of the school. The tentative numbers were as follows:

  • Centennial Arts Academy: 855
  • Enota Multiple Intelligences Academy: 805
  • Fair Street IBS: 508
  • McEver Arts Academy: 632
  • Mundy Mill Academy: 575
  • New Holland Knowledge and Career Academy: 597
  • Gainesville Middle: 1,861
  • Gainesville High: 2,301

Gainesville High had 626 freshman, 581 sophomores, 530 juniors and 485 seniors, according to the report.

Following the reports, Williams highlighted that the Gainesville school system had the highest rate of English learners in the system in the state, with the amount of students learning the language at 30%.
