Hall sheriff's deputy recognized for nearly 200 DUI arrests

A Hall County sheriff's deputy, John Thompson, is the winner of this year's "Highway Safety Champion Award" from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.

The award recognizes a Georgia law enforcement officer for his or her "outstanding dedication to reducing crashes, injuries, and fatalities" on Georgia's roadways.

During the last calendar year, Thompson made 190 individual arrests for driving under the influence. During the same time period, Thompson has issued an additional 2,500 combined citations for speeding, reckless driving, occupant safety and distracted driving. He has also been recognized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving and received the GOHS "DUI Officer of the Year" award.

In addition, Thompson picked up the GOHS Northeast Traffic Enforcement Network “DUI Officer of the Year” award. 

During the year, he was also involved in more than 120 hours of educational events. These included teaching at the Hall County Teen Driving Program, Hall County Citizens Academy and at several local businesses that employ large numbers of drivers.
