Volleyball: GHS sweeps, West Hall wins two in season openers

GAINESVILLE — The Gainesville girls volleyball team opened its 2019 season with an impressive sweep of Alcovy and Lakeview Academy at the Lakeview gym Thursday night.
 
The Lady Red Elephants routed Alcovy 25-6, 25-4 and then held off host Lakeview 25-11, 25-15.
 
Isabella Appling led Gainesville with with 5 aces, 7 kills, and 2 digs. Camille Calkins added 6 kills and 3 aces. Camille Holcomb had 10 assists.
 
Isabella Garrish had 18 assists and 7 aces for the Lady Red Elephants. Lauren Teasley added 8 blocks and 10 kills while Kendal Glasper had 2 aces and 2 blocks.
 
Defensive specialists Karlea Grace Lanford and Margaret Embry combined for 8 digs.  Kassie Coley, Abbey Linhart, and Lauren Ware contributed with 4 kills.
 
Gainesville (2-0) next will travel to North Hall on Tuesday for a tri-match with North Hall and North Forsyth.
 
WEST HALL TAKES 2 OF 3 AT NORTH FORSYTH
 
West Hall opened its season Thursday night going 2-1 after in a four-way meet at North Forsyth.
 
The Lady Spartans took wins over Woodland (forfeit) and Lumpkin County (22-25, 25-21, 15-10) but fell to host North Forsyth (23-25, 25-19, 9-15).
 
Cadie Shirley had 18 kills, 14 digs, and 2 aces to pace West Hall. Kinsey Wilson added 14 digs and 12 kills and setters Kaitlyn Courson and Chloe Radich combined for 27 assists.
 
West Hall will travel to Jefferson on Friday.
