Gainesville: Rubber Duck Derby Festival canceled but ducks will race, rain or shine

By AccessWDUN Staff

The festival and concert scheduled for Saturday, May 11, as part of the 21st Annual Rubber Duck Derby in Gainesville, have been canceled because of the continued threat of thunderstorms.

However, the ducks will race, rain or shine, although earlier in the day than originally planned. Boys & Girls Club Board Co-Chair Larry Baldwin will oversee the duck race. Winners will be notified as soon as possible after the race, and all prizes will be awarded.

The  Duck Derby is a Gainesville tradition with 20,000 yellow rubber ducks racing for prizes at the rowing venue at Lake Lanier Olympic Park. The event benefits the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier Senior Leadership along with Board Co-Chairs made the decision to cancel the festival portion of the Rubber Duck Derby late Friday afternoon based on weather forecasts. Joyce Wilson, Chief Development Officer said, “We hate to cancel such a fun event since we all look forward to it every year. But, we are concerned for everyone’s safety and comfort.”
