AOW: Vazquez and Hernandez "chip" the Red Elephants to the quarterfinals

By Bo Wilson Sports Editor

GAINESVILLE — Gainesville boys soccer coach Elie Viviant didn't know his team was going to run "the chip" play against two-time defending state champ Chattahoochee last week in the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs at City Park Stadium.

When Jorge Vasquez softly chipped a pass over the Cougars' defense to Armando Hernandez, Viviant and the entire Red Elephant team gasped. It was a play that had never worked in practice. On this day, however, it worked to perfection.

Hernandez one-timed it past the diving Chattahoochee goalkeeper with three minutes left for what ended up being the game-winner in a historic-like 2-1 win over the Cougars.

For those reasons, Vasquez and Hernandez have been named this week's Conditioned Air Systems Athletes of the Week.

AccessWDUN's Bo Wilson and Jeff Hart had a chance to catch up with the pair and Viviant to discuss the play that is sure to go down as one of the best in Gainesville soccer history.
