Pendergrass man arrested for stealing mail from dozens of customers

By B.J. Williams

A Pendergrass man, who has a criminal history in Jackson County, is back behind bars this week following his arrest for mail theft.

Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum said deputies began getting reports of a suspicious vehicle traveling around various neighborhoods in the county late last week. Based on the vehicle description and a description of the driver, deputies were able to arrest Anthony Eugene Miller, 38, on Tuesday, Feb. 5.

"They had a general location where he might be and when they got there, they found the vehicle and got him located," Mangum said. "The vehicle was towed to the sheriff's office...it had a lot of mail in it."

Mangum said her investigators are now in the process of locating the people who were victims in the thefts.

"We haven't gotten in touch with everybody that the mail belongs to. A lot of the addresses were Gainesville." Mangum said, noting that she saw tax forms among the pieces of stolen mail.

Mangum said the U.S. Postal Inspection Service is also involved in the investigation.

The sheriff said the vehicle being used in the thefts was stolen, and she said Miller has had run-ins with law enforcement in the county in the past.

"He is very well known to us," Mangum said.

Miller remains in jail with no bond.

He has been charged with 27 counts of ID theft, theft by receiving stolen motor vehicle, removing or affixing license plate with intent to conceal identity of a vehicle, obstruction of law enforcement officer and felony probation violation.

Mangum said it is possible he could face additional charges.
