Security guard injured when hit by SUV on Old Oakwood Road

By B.J. Williams

A woman working as a security guard for a private company was injured when she was hit by an SUV outside a Gainesville business early Friday morning.

SFC Auston Allen with the Georgia State Patrol said troopers were called to the accident scene on Old Oakwood Road near Mountain View Road just after 7 a.m.

Allen said they were able to determine the driver of a 2004 GMC Yukon, a 32-year-old Gainesville man, was traveling southbound on Old Oakwood Road, and he came upon the woman standing in the roadway just south of Mountain View Road

"There's a business there...and a private security guard for the business was assisting a tractor trailer that was trying to turn into the business," Allen said. "The tractor trailer was stopped on Old Oakwood Road facing northbound."

He said the security guard, identified as a 21-year-old woman from Lula, was standing next to the tractor trailer.

"Unfortunately, she was not wearing any type of reflective clothing or safety clothing - no type of vest, no type of florescent nothing, no flashlights," Allen said. "At 7:08 with the clouds, with the rain, it was basically dark at that point in time, [so she] couldn't be seen."

Allen described the woman's injuries as moderate. He said early indications were that her pelvis might have been broken, although x-rays had not been performed at the time he checked on her at the hospital.

Allen said the driver of the SUV was not at fault in the crash, but he was cited for driving without a license.

Even though the security guard was not authorized to be in the roadway, Allen said she would not be charged in the accident.
