Fire destroys two homes at campground near Turners Corner

Firefighters from Lumpkin, White and Union counties worked together to extinguish structure fires at a campground on U.S. 19/U.S. 129 in rural Lumpkin County Thursday night.

White County 9-1-1 received a request for mutual aid from Lumpkin County about 9:30 p.m. Thursday for structure fires at Mountain View Campground near Roadkill Café, said White County Fire Services spokeswoman Ana Newberry.

“Upon arrival, two units were fully involved,” Newberry said in a statement.

No injuries were reported.

“There were two homes destroyed,” said Lumpkin County Fire Chief David Wimpy.

The cause of the fires remains under investigation.

White County Tanker 6 and fire personnel assisted Lumpkin County for about 3.5 hours, Newberry said.

Mountain View Campground is located at 15220 Hwy. 19 North, Cleveland, just north of Turners Corner.

Dean Dyer of WRWH Radio in Cleveland contributed to this report.
