Girls basketball: Buford's Durden gets 800th win; Lakeview, NHall, Chestatee, Union get wins; GHS, EHall, WHall fall

LOGANVILLE — Gene Durden earned his 800th win Wednesday night as the Buford girls beat Loganville 48-30 in Region 8-5A action.

The game was moved from Tuesday after expected weather.

Buford (21-2, 9-0 Region 8-5A) used a 14-3 second quarter to blow open a close game. The Lady Wolves led just 13-6 after the first quarter but pushed their lead to 27-9 by halftime and then 42-17 heading into the final period.

The Lady Wolves were led by Tate Walters with 9 points. Preston Reid added 8 points for Buford.

Buford will play host to Clarke Central (11-9, 8-1 Region 8-5A) on Friday with a chance to clinch the top seed in the upcoming region tournament.

 

LAKEVIEW ACADEMY 72,
ATHENS ACADEMY 52

The Lady Lions clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Region 8-A tournament with a big win at home Wednesday.
 
Eliza Snyder continued her good work of late pouring in 21 points to go with 3 rebounds and 3 steals to pace Lakeview (20-4, 8-0 Region 8-A).
 
Joelle Snyder added 12 points with 3 assists and 3 steals and Maddy Towles had 8 points for the Lady Lions. Jasmine Howard added 7 points, Jackie Allen and Savannah Kinsey had 6 points each, Sadie Thrailkill added 5 points and 5 rebounds, and Linda Geib had 4 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals for Lakeview.
 
Lakeview will close out the regular season on the road at Hebron Christian on Friday.

 

UNION COUNTY 39,
BANKS COUNTY 36

Union County overcame a 15-8 first-quarter deficit to rally for a big Region 8-2A win on the road Wednesday.
 
Banks County (19-5, 9-4 Region 8-2A) jumped out to the quick lead but were outscored 32-21 the rest of the way and had its three-game win streak snapped.
 
The Lady Panthers (13-10, 6-7 Region 8-2A) snapped a two-game losing streak and also moved into a tie for fifth place with Elbert County heading into Friday's season finale against last place Oglethorpe County.
 
Banks County was led by Jaycie Bowen with 8 points. Amber Williams had 7 points and Heather Vaughan, Kennedy Smith, and Pollie Simpson each had 6 points for the Lady Leopards, who will play host to Social Circle on Friday.

 

CHESTATEE 35,
BLESSED TRINITY 34

The Chestatee girls clinched the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Region 7-4A tournament Wednesday night.

The Lady War Eagles (13-12, 7-5 ) were led by Christina Garcia with 12 points. Maggie McNair had 8 points for Chestatee. 

The two teams will meet again on Monday in the first round of the region tournament at Marist with the winner securing a spot in the state tournament and the loser ending their season.

 

WINDER-BARROW 62,
GAINESVILLE 61

Despite 27 points from Tija Blackwell and 20 points from Tia Shelton, the Lady Red Elephants could not overcome a big second quarter by the Lady Bulldoggs in a Region 8-6A loss at home.
 
Gainesville (11-11, 3-6 Region 8-6A) led 16-12 early but Winder-Barrow (17-7, 7-2 Region 8-6A) used a 22-11 second quarter to take a 34-27 into the intermission. The Lady Bulldogs maintained a 49-42 lead heading into the final period.
 
The Lady Red Elephants stormed back behind Tija Blackwell and Tia Shelton, who combined for 18 of their 19 fourth-quarter points. But Gainesville missed a game-winning shot at the buzzer for the upset.
 
Daisa Stillwell led Winder-Barrow with 17 points.
 

MARIST 60,
WEST HALL 24

Marist outscored the Lady Spartans 22-4 in the first half en route to the Region 7-4A win.

The Lady War Eagles (17-6, 8-3 Region 7-4A) outscored West Hall (5-17, 1-10 Region 7-4A) 38-20 in the second half
 
West Hall's Kinsey Wilson led all scorers with 14 points and 9 rebounds. India Strickland added 7 points for the Lady Spartans.

West Hall will close out the regular season on Friday at home against Blessed Trinity on Senior night.

Gainesville will close out the regular season on Friday at home against region leader Lanier.
 

NORTH HALL 44
LUMPKIN COUNTY 37

Grace Hollifield and Rylee McCall scored 11 points each to lead the North Hall comeback against Lumpkin County at home.

North Hall needed a fourth-quarter rally to pick up the Region 7-3A win and the No. 3 seed in next week's tournament.

Clara White led the Lady Indians with 11 points.

North Hall (15-8, 7-4) will travel to Cherokee Bluff Friday. Game time is 6 p.m.

Lumpkin (17-8, 6-6) is off.

GREATER ATLANTA 83
EAST HALL 43

Gracie Smith scored 12 points and Alexis Burce had 10 in the loss to GAC Wednesday at home.

East Hall (9-15, 3-8) travels to Dawson County Friday at 7 p.m.
