SUWANEE — In a battle of Class A Private top 10 teams, the Lakeview Academy boys held off Wesleyan 56-54 Monday in the BCB MLK Showcase at Peachtree Ridge High School.
Lakeview trailed by at halftime and by four heading into the fourth quarter. Adam Cottrell hit a 3-pointer midway through the final period to give the Lions the lead and they pushed it six late before hanging on at the end.
Lakeview missed two free throws with a chance to ice the game and Wesleyan missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have won it.
Lakeview coach Todd Cottrell said they were fortunate to escape with a win.
"We missed some free throws and really didn't play that well I thought," Cottrell said. "I don't think Wesleyan played as well as I've seen them but both teams played hard. It was a good playoff test."
Cottrell led the Lions (16-5) with 19 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists while Blake McIntyre added 15 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Holden Cooper had 10 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and KJ Millwood pulled down 10 rebounds for Lakeview.
The Lions have now won eight straight games since dropping a 60-59 heartbreaker to Gainesville in the Lanierland Tournament back on Dec. 28.
