Grant will enable Lula to expand Wellness Park

LULA — The City of Lula will begin work quickly on expansion of the city’s Wellness Park, thanks to the revival of a grant that had been dormant.

“We are thrilled that this grant has been recommitted to us,” Mayor Jim Grier told AccessWDUN at the conclusion of Monday night’s city council work session.

The total project cost will come in at just more than $100,000.

“The grant funds will be $79,000 and city’s share will be a little over $22,000 to make up that difference,” Grier said.

The grant was received by the city a couple of years ago, but the city’s matching funds were not allocated at that time. Recently, City Manager Dennis Bergin successfully worked to re-secure that funding for Lula.

“That will allow us to expand our current Lula Wellness Park and add some new trails to the north of the existing park area and provide a new access to that area as well,” Grier said. “It’s going to really improve the usefulness of our park, and we hope the enjoyment for all of our citizens.”

Some of the funds will be spent over the next few days.

“We’ll be starting on that immediately,” Grier said. “We actually are going to purchase some of the equipment this week, and we’ll be moving forward with the engineering, then the construction very soon after that.”
