Flowery Branch OKs zoning code changes, GHMPO appointee

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

The Flowery Branch City Council gave its final approval to the final part of a set of changes to the city's zoning code Thursday.

The changes, which were made by City Planning Director Rich Atkinson, involved most of the articles in the exiting code and were voted on in three different sections, with the first two being approved at previous council meetings. Atkinson said the changes are mostly to clean up language in codes that have not been updated in many years.

"Some of it's just clerical, but most of it is just to streamline things," Atkinson said. "To make things more clear to developers, clear to citizens, clear to staff so we all are on the same page."

He said that city council members suggested that the code changes be presented in parts so that the council could more easily digest each code change.

"Even though some of the articles may have been 60 pages long and it may have only been three changes, they still had to go through and look at it. So it was council member Anglin, I believe, who suggested we break it up into three or four reads," Atkinson said.

The changes were first shown to the council on May 4.

GHMPO Citizen's Advisory Committee appointment

The city council also approved an appointment to the Gainesville Hall Metropolitan Planning Organization's Citizen's Advisory Committee at the Thursday meeting.

Councilmen Joe Anglin and Christopher Mundy appointed David Jones to the committee, with the rest of the council unanimously approving it. Anglin spoke about Jones after the meeting.

"David Jones is a very intelligent guy. Somebody that's going to be engaged, somebody that's not scared to offer up his opinion on things, he's going to gather facts and I think he'll work real well with the city," Anglin said.
