GAINESVILLE — Chestatee High athletic director Ben Corley announced Tuesday that Sutton Shirley has been selected as the school's new girls basketball coach, pending school board approval.
Shirley spent the past four seasons as an assistant for the East Hall girls and three years as an assistant with the Chestatee girls. He takes over from interim coach Chris Guthrie, who steered the program for most of the season after former coach Web Daniel was suspended and eventually arrested and charged with felony sexual assault against a student and misdemeanor sexual battery.
The Lady War Eagles battled on in 2017-18 and reached the state playoffs despite the turmoil, and now Chestatee is looking forward to a new direction under Shirley.
“Coach Shirley has been an integral part of the success in East Hall’s basketball program over the last few years, but he also understands the tradition of Chestatee’s program," Corley said. "He has a great passion for basketball and a desire to see young people succeed that will serve him well as he leads our program into the future.”
This will be his first opportunity as a head coach.
“Coach Shirley is a wonderful re-addition to our Chestatee family. We are excited for him to return home and lead our girls program,” Chstate High Principal Suzanne Jarrard said.
