Update: FAA releases preliminary details of fatal Union County plane crash

Officials in Union County remain on the scene of a fatal airplane crash near the airport in Blairsville.

Kathleen Bergen of the Federal Aviation Administration provided some basic preliminary details of the incident.

“Dec. 19, at 7:36 p.m., a Piper PA28 aircraft crashed in a wooded area less than one-half nautical mile from the airport in Blairsville,” Bergen said.

Union County officials say the crash involves fatalities, but declined to release specifics until notification of family members.

“There were four people on board,” according to Bergen. “Local authorities will release their names and conditions; the FAA will release the aircraft registration after that. The FAA is investigating. The NTSB will determine probable cause of the accident.”

Richard Marlar of Fox 5 Atlanta contributed to this report.
