United Community Bank has donated $250,000 to Blairsville-based Union General Hospital through the Georgia HEART Hospital Program.

A press release from United Community Bank said the hospital will use the donation to expand its operating room by doubling the number of rooms from four to eight.

“At United, our purpose is to utilize our skills to improve the financial health and well-being of the communities we serve,” said Adam Born, President of Blairsville for United. “Union General is an incredible asset to us with a dedicated staff who serves and protects our community through reliable, high-quality health care every day. We’re proud to support Union General through the Georgia HEART Program.”

The HEART program helps rural and critical access hospitals increase their funding and expand their capabilities to better serve the healthcare needs of Georgia residents. Georgia HEART administers the Georgia Rural Hospital Tax Credit, enabling both businesses and people to redirect their Georgia income tax liability to support local hospitals. In 2023, more than $38 million in tax credits have been applied for to date.

“We are so grateful for United’s extremely generous donation and their support of the community as a whole,” said Lindsey Townsend, Director of Philanthropic Outreach for Union General Health System. “It will go a long way in helping us expand and renovate our operating room, among other areas of the hospital.”
