GDOT busy clearing roads in mountain counties

With the wintry weather Georgia Department of Transportation crews have been busy clearing roads of ice and even downed trees.

Spokeswoman Katie Strickland said Sunday the most impact was in the more northern mountain counties.

"Rabun, Towns, Union, Habersham, White," Strickland said. "Even in Stephens County we had significant ice and snow fall on the roadway."

She said beginning Saturday night, crews were out addressing problem areas.

"We immediately deployed," Strickland said. "Started getting that ice and snow off the roadways with our snow plows and started spreading materials. That small crushed rock and salt that will help lower the freezing point."

Strickland said the most downed trees were in Stephens County. She added temperatures are expected to hoover above freezing, but if that changes, crews will be out spreading brine mixture or they will be treating and clearing ice areas.
