THOMASTON — If Atlanta United hosts the MLS Cup Finals on Dec. 8th, the Georgia High School Association has a backup plan in place for its football state championship games.
The GHSA announced back in July that all state championship football games scheduled at Mercedes-Benz Stadium this year will be held at the stadium. The finals are slated for Dec. 7th & 8th, for now.
The only wrinkle to those plans could be Georgia's pro soccer team, Atlanta United.
Atlanta United, which calls Mercedes-Benz home, plays the New York Red Bulls in the Eastern Conference Finals - the first Leg begins Sunday in Atlanta. If United beats the Red Bulls, they'll host the MLS Cup on Dec. 8th.
If this scenario plays out, the GHSA has a backup plan.
The GHSA, with a unanimous vote by Board of Trustees in July, says the championship games at Mercedes-Benz would be moved to Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 11 and 12.
This move comes on the heels of the 2017 finals having to be moved a week back due to a snowstorm that blanketed most of north Georgia and forced the cancelation of all but two finals scheduled for Mercedes-Benz.
