Rabun firefighters respond to home explosion/fire with report of people trapped

CLAYTON — It was a scary time for Rabun County Fire Services personnel early Friday as they responded to a reported structure fire with people trapped inside just after 2 a.m.

Stations 1, 5 and 12 were dispatched to the fire at 40 Parker Robinson Lane, with Dispatch initially advising them that people were trapped inside, said Rabun County Fire Services Assistant Chief Justin Upchurch.

“After the first units went en route, Dispatch advised that all subjects were out of the building,” Upchurch said. “Engine 1 arrived to find an approximately 1,000- square-foot dwelling fully involved with fire. The homeowner advised that they were awakened by a booming with the ceiling beginning to fall in. They were able to escape and upon our arrival, it was obvious that there had been an explosion with the exterior walls blown away from the structure on the left side and insulation found in a tree beside the house.”

Upchurch said Station 6 was requested for manpower and an additional tanker for water supply.

No injuries were reported.

Personnel were on scene for about three and one-half hours.

“Rabun County Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate due to the nature of the call,” Upchurch said.

That investigation is ongoing.
