Gwinnett PD: Man steals 4 cars, hits several others, during chase

By Associated Press

NORCROSS, Ga. (AP) Authorities in Gwinnett County say a man is in custody after stealing four vehicles, including a police car, and leading officers on a three-city chase.

The ordeal began Thursday afternoon in Norcross when an officer was called to a hit-and-run crash.

The suspect fled in a box truck toward DeKalb County. He reportedly struck several cars while fleeing and was detained by witnesses. An arriving officer handcuffed him and placed him in a patrol car after discovering he had a warrant. The suspect maneuvered his hands from behind his back, squeezed through the patrol car's window cage and fled.

He abandoned that car nearby and stole a pickup truck. He drove to a restaurant and stole another pickup and fled to Duluth, striking more cars.

Officers forced him to flip the truck onto its side.

He was taken to a hospital and faces multiple charges when released.

Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Michele Pihera said in a press statement that the suspect committed as many as eight hit and runs during the incident. She said four Gwinnett County patrol vehicles were damaged.

As of Thursday night the suspect's name was being withheld.
