Bicyclist seriously injured after being struck by car in Cornelia

CORNELIA — A Habersham County man remained in critical but stable condition Sunday after his bicycle was struck by a car in Cornelia about 11 p.m. Saturday.

Michael Carl Burrell, 43, who has addresses in Cornelia and Alto, was riding his grey Roadmaster Ground Assault bicycle southbound on Ga. 105 (Veterans Memorial Drive) when it was struck from behind by a silver Hyundai Accent driven by Michael Steven Wylie, 30, of Baldwin, according to Sr. Trooper John Crawford of Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa.

Wylie told Crawford he didn’t see the bicycle prior to impact.

After impact occurred in the southbound lane, the bicycle and Burrell were knocked into the northbound lane, Crawford said.

The bicycle had a full set of factory-installed reflectors, said Crawford, who added Burrell was not wearing a helmet or other protective gear.

The wreck occurred in the area of ETHICON and GlobalTech, and resulted in traffic being detoured around the scene for more than 90 minutes, Crawford said.

Burrell remained in intensive care Sunday, Crawford said.

Crawford said the wreck remains under investigation and no charges have been filed so far.
