Unlucky 911 call leads to $408K drug bust in Habersham County

An unlucky — or for law enforcement, lucky — 911 call led deputies to a $408,600 drug bust in Habersham County this week.

It started July 4, when Nicholas Green, 35, was working on the phone line at his home on Alec Mountain Road in the Clarkesville area, which led to a malfunction and random 911 call, said Mitchell Posey, special agent in charge with the Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office (ARDEO).

"It's good luck for us — the good guys — and bad luck for Mr. Green," said Posey.

When Green hung up the phone, Habersham County Sheriff's deputies showed to make sure everything was okay, at which point Green "slammed the door shut."

Deputies reported a smell of marijuana coming from the home, and notified ARDEO, which sent agents to execute a search warrant.

They found 25 marijuana plants, 23 half-gallon mason jars filled with marijuana, one mason jar filled with mushrooms, $660 cash and multiple firearms, said Posey.

Agents believe Green had recently moved into the home, and was not from the area. Posey said the investigation could lead to more arrests, but agents still aren't sure how far-reaching Green's operation might have been.

Green was taken into custody on charges of manufacturing marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a schedule-one narcotic.

At last report, Green remained in the Habersham County Detention Center.
